After a round of observation, the hot hand of Klay Thompson, author of 16 points in the first quarter, and the outside address of Golden State (7/14) allow them to pass a 19-6 to the Hawks to take 12 points ahead (38-26).
With Trae Young, only Hawk has survived so far, on the bench, Atlanta’s attack is stagnating and their defense continues to sink (51-34). The return of the incumbents does not change the situation. The Warriors unroll their basketball with 20 assists to take a 21-point lead. It takes a good pass from John Collins to limit the breakage (70-53).
Behind an initial 6-0 and Trae Young sending Onyeka Okongwu three times to dunk, the Hawks restart the game. Klay Thompson responds systematically to stop the bleeding but Atlanta regains address and passes a 14-4 to the Warriors (86-84)! Golden State’s defense is lost to Trae Young’s pick-and-roll. The leader distributes 9 assists in the quarter time and puts the two teams back to back (95-95).
The Hawks continue their momentum thanks to the aggressiveness of Dejounte Murray towards the circle and the address of Bogdan Bogdanovic to take a nine-point lead (115-106). Klay Thompson and Draymond Green may struggle, the Hawks are heading for victory thanks to the duo Murray – Young but Donte DiVincenzo sends the two teams into overtime on a winning shot after two offensive rebounds (121-121)!
Two extensions!
While the Hawks take the best start in overtime, the Warriors pass them an 8-0 thanks to two award-winning shots from Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole to take the lead with 90 seconds to play (129-126). However, Trae Young responds to a new award-winning shot from Klay Thompson to give us a second overtime (132-132).
Fatigue is then felt and it is the Warriors who have the excess energy to seek offensive rebounds and dragging balls. However, it takes a double tap from Kevon Looney at the buzzer to give the victory to the Warriors! Fifth in a row for the Warriors. Fourth straight loss for the Hawks.
WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER
– All or nothing 3-point. The Warriors started the game on fire. Taking advantage of the passivity of the Atlanta defense, they got a myriad of open shots and converted 10 of their 22 attempts from long range. Conversely, the Hawks were only 2/15. The away address completely switched sides at halftime. Atlanta went 7 of 13 as the Warriors were suddenly unable to score a long shot, ending the second half at 5/24.
– Identical scenario for the substitutes. Despite the absences of Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, JaMychal Green, and Andre Iguodala, Steve Kerr was able to count on substitutes ready to seize the opportunity given to them. Special mention to Anthony Lamb and rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr. who scored 13 and 8 points respectively 4/8 from distance in the first half, while being active defensively. Atlanta’s bench was transparent, until Bogdan Bogdanovic woke up in the second half, in which he scored 17 of 21 points to get Atlanta going again.
– Trae Young changes the face of the match. Relatively discreet in the first half, the Hawks point guard revived his team in the third quarter by dissecting the Warriors defense on pick and roll. He first found Okungwu three times in a row on the roll, before using it to deliver open shots to his wingers. The Hawks’ offensive awakening allowed them to set up their defense to make life difficult for the Warriors in the second half.
