Why is Nikola Jokic nicknamed the “Joker”?

Pride of Serbia like Novak Djokovic, Nikola Jokic not only shares sporting excellence with the tennis legend, again in the Roland-Garros final this Sunday. The two men also have a nickname in common: the Joker.

If the man with 22 Grand Slam titles has this nickname for his imitations of other players on the circuit and for the resemblance to his own name, the pivot of the Nuggets, he inherited it on a misunderstanding.

Or rather on a bad pronunciation, because Mike Miller, who rubbed shoulders with the double MVP at the end of his career, between 2015 and 2017, says “Jo-kitch” and not “Yo-kitch”.

“Because he was a big blunderer, and Jokic, that brings you to Joker. To tell the truth, his style of play looks like that to me,” explains the former NBA champion with Miami at denver post. “I fell in love with his style of play, his way of making others better, his creativity in passing the ball. That’s why I called him the Joker. »

The man who is now Paolo Banchero’s agent has made a great find, which has taken on a new dimension over the years with the enormous performances of Jokic. And that, Miller could not imagine.

“I knew he could do good things, but to say that I thought of him as a double MVP, a player who would go to the Finals and who would achieve such performances… It takes a lot to get there. He is obviously very, very strong and he continues to improve year after year. Which is pretty crazy. »
