Which players can become eligible for a “supermax extension”?

Warning: dizzying figures approaching. Next season, as reported by ESPN’s Bobby Markseight players will have the opportunity to become eligible for an extension of type ” super max », which they will be able to sign in the summer of 2024 or in the summer of 2025.

In this list of eight players, we find Bam Adebayo (Heat), Luka Doncic (Mavericks), De’Aaron Fox (Kings), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder), Brandon Ingram (Pelicans), Jaren Jackson (Grizzlies), Jamal Murray (Nuggets) and finally Pascal Siakam (Raptors).

A minimum of 65 matches to play

Remember that the “supermax” designation allows a player to receive an annual salary equivalent to 35% of the salary cap of his frankness. That is, for 2023/24, an amount set at $47.6 million (out of $136 million).

Several criteria must, however, be met by players who wish to receive this “supermax extension”, since they must…

– have at least seven seasons of seniority in the NBA
– play on the team that drafted them (or picked them up via transfer when they were still in their rookie contract)
– be in one of the three All-NBA Teams and/or be Defender of the Year and/or be MVP

Also, these eight players must have played at least 65 of the 82 matches for their respective teams, as required by the new collective agreement to be eligible for the end of season trophies. All while having fulfilled one of the three eligibility criteria the season preceding the signing of their contract (All-NBA, DPOY), during two of the last three (All-NBA, DPOY) or during one of the last three (MVP).

Luka Doncic and Jaren Jackson Jr. on their way to the jackpot?

If all goes well for them, Luka Doncic and Jaren Jackson Jr. could be THE big winners of the 2023/24 season financially.

Quite simply because a “supermax” type extension would allow them to obtain a contract of around $318 million over five years, but which they will only be able to initial from the summer of 2025, when they will have seven years of seniority in the NBA. With such dealsthe Slovenian and the American would above all become the first players to reach the mark of 70 million dollars annually!

Even crazier: if the salary cap increases by 10% over the next three seasons, the extensions of Luka Doncic and Jaren Jackson Jr. could rise to almost $368 million over five years, with a final year close to $84 million annually!

As for Bam Adebayo ($245 million over four years), De’Aaron Fox ($245 million over four years), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ($258 million over four years), Brandon Ingram ($303 million over five years), Jamal Murray ($303 million over five years) and Pascal Siakam ($288 million over five years), they will eventually have to “settle” for a few million dollars less than Luka Doncic and Jaren Jackson Jr. in case of “supermax extension”.
