Visiting Los Angeles this weekend to challenge the Lakers then the Clippers with his new Milwaukee team, Doc Rivers spoke about his time with the Clippers from 2013 to 2020.
Before the start of the 2010s, the Clippers were still this “cursed” and discredited franchise, subscribed to the depths of the Western conference, before becoming “Lob City”, an ultra-spectacular and much more competitive formation, notably with two half- conference finals in 2014 and 2015, after notably eliminating the Spurs during a legendary series in the first round (4-3).
Ten years later, Doc Rivers pointed out a specificity of the Californian franchise, which has not yet put a single player in its history in the spotlight by retiring his jersey. The Bucks coach therefore proposed three names, as he had suggested when he was in office at the time. Three emblematic players who marked this beautiful era of “Lob City” under his orders.
“I wanted to retire a jersey, but there wasn’t really a jersey to retire”, did he declare. “I think there will be jerseys to retire in the years to come. Blake Griffin, I think DeAndre Jordan should be, 100%. And I think Chris Paul does too. Now they're starting to create a story, and that's important for franchises, and that's what we wanted to do at the time.”
With his 10,863 points, Blake Griffin is the second highest scorer in franchise history behind Randy Smith (12,735). Deandre Jordan is the best rebounder ahead of Elton Brand (7,988) and Blake Griffin (4,686) while Chris Paul is the best passer (4,023) in the club's history.
The inauguration of the Intuit Dome, the Clippers' brand new venue in Inglewood, will undoubtedly allow owner Steve Ballmer to reconsider the possibility of honoring some of the franchise's former glories.
