When Mike Conley thought he was going to the Clippers

This is the surprise of this start to the season. Even if Lauri Markkanen doesn’t like every Jazz victory to be considered as such, seeing the Utah franchise at the top of the Western Conference after eleven games remains very surprising.

How can you imagine the Jazz winning so many matches when Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanovic left during the offseason? The group exploded and rumors around other veterans, like Jordan Clarkson or Mike Conley, also existed. He can testify to that.

“We tried to manage as best as possible”says the leader, speaking of his wife and him, for The Athletic. “It was complicated because we didn’t have many answers to our questions. We didn’t know who was going to move or not. We had no idea what was next. I felt like every day I was going to be transferred somewhere. »

“It was difficult at the beginning, because I am 35 years old and I was used to aiming for the title. I came to Jazz to play the title”

For a time, the former Memphis thought about joining the Clippers. Tyronn Lue has never hidden his admiration for Mike Conley. “I consider him to be one of the most underrated playmakers in history.”, said the Clippers coach. The Los Angeles franchise wanted a playmaker and they will bet on John Wall instead.

Finally, Mike Conley remained in Utah, not without imagining that the season could become long since the club had lost its best defender and its best attacker during the summer, and also changed coach.

“It was difficult at the beginning, because I am 35 years old and I was used to aiming for the title. I came to Jazz to play the title. So I was wondering how it was going to end. As soon as we got our new coach (Will Hardy), that he put things in place, I knew I wanted to stay here. »

In 30 minutes, the former All-Star is currently running at 12.5 points (42% success at 3-pts) and 7.5 assists on average. Never has he been so skilful behind the arc, nor so prolific with the pass in his career.

“I wanted to put my ego aside and focus on my teammates. We build, we grow. I loved every second on this team and we play basketball that we haven’t shown in a while. »
