After a good 2022/23 season, marked by a return to the second round of the playoffs, the Knicks logically play the continuity card this summer. The five majors of the past financial year are under contract, while rotations of external positions have been reinforced with the upcoming contract extension of Josh Hart and especially the recruitment of Donte DiVincenzo, widely praised by Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry on the side from San Francisco.
In a fairly calm off-season but on the whole rather consistent, there is therefore a possible last file to be managed, for the management of the franchise of new York : recruit a player to strengthen the interior sector, after the departure of Obi Toppin to the Pacers, and while the Isaiah Roby track is not certain to succeed.
Several avenues still possible
According to the New York Daily Newstwo names in particular should be watched, among the interiors still available on the market: Gorgui Dieng And Derrick Jones Jr.. Two very different profiles.
The first is a pure pivot, and it is therefore difficult to see any particular interest in his recruitment as the minutes will be difficult to obtain in this position, behind Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein, even Jericho Sims. On the other hand, the second is a very interesting target for the New York club, to replace, position for position, Obi Toppin. Athletic strong winger and good defender, the player seen in Chicago for the past two years seems to correspond more to the profile of Tom Thibodeau.
It remains to be seen whether the two camps can find common ground, financially. Last month, Derrick Jones Jr. decided to decline his $3.3 million player option in an effort to find a better deal. The Knicks, as SNY reminds, still have their “bi-annual exception”, of approximately 4.5 million dollars. Two weeks after the opening of the market, “DDJ” could not find better…
The Knicks are no doubt studying other avenues on the market, and no doubt also that the club’s management is studying possible transfers for Evan Fournier, whose expiring contract (18.8 million next season and “team option” for the 2024/ 25) could facilitate a trade this summer, for a player from the interior sector.
