Sport is far from being an exact science and that is part of its beauty. The scouting experiences for the Draft are one of the witnesses since every year, players slip through the cracks. This is how in 2012, Draymond Green was selected 35th by Golden State!
Stroke of genius or stroke of luck, it is Bob Myers who still speaks about it best, in all humility, while the Warriors also had the 7th and 30th choices that year, with which they had taken Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli.
“Everyone in the NBA always pretends to have done everything right,” had thus recalled Draymond Green. “That’s what I respect about Bob Myers, when he said to me: ‘Draymond, you can’t say you’re that smart. Because if we really were, we would have taken you with the 7th pick, or even the 30th. So we can’t say we’re that smart, even if it turns out it turned out in the right direction for us.”
Beaten by Miles Plumlee
Guest on Paul George’s podcast, the All-Star interior also revealed that he could well have teamed up with him since the Pacers had shown their interest with their 26th choice. Ultimately, it was an unexpected event, the resignation of Larry Bird, then president of the franchise, which occurred the day before the Draft, which would have derailed everything.
“I did two workouts for Indiana. I thought I had a chance, 100%, but I got passed over by Miles Plumlee with the 26th pick.”he said. “So much happened during the Draft with Indiana. The day I showed up for the second workout, I turned on the TV, and I saw that Larry Bird had just left his post, which must have been a day or two before the Draft.”
It was a close call for Draymond Green to play alongside Paul George but also George Hill, Lance Stephenson, David West and Roy Hibbert, within an Indiana team that rivaled the Heat at the era. But fate would have it otherwise, and the interior finally found itself in Golden State with the 35th choice.
“I had a lot of bad luck during this Draft. I had three or four teams that were very interested, but whose front office changed, maybe a week or ten days before the Draft. I had a bit of bad luck but I really believe that nothing happens by chance. But yeah, these guys let me get away with it and they only have themselves to blame! »he concluded, pointing out without naming them Donnie Walsh and Kevin Pritchard who had taken over from Larry Bird for the 2012 Draft.
