Wesley Matthews joins the Hawks

Dejounte Murray extended for four years, the backcourt of Hawks is confirmed with Trae Young. And the direction of the clubAtlanta has apparently decided, after a lackluster 2022/23 season, to surround them with confirmed veterans and valued locker room pillars: after Patty Mills, it’s Wesley Matthews which thus joins Georgia.

At 36, the rear, replaced by Malik Beasley in Milwaukee, is far from his best years, but he remains a player who can be useful on a few sequences, in the second or third rotation.

At the Hawks, he will be behind Bogdanovic Bogdanovic, De’Andre Hunter, Saddiq Bey and AJ Griffin in the back/wing hierarchy, and will no doubt also play a veteran role for these four young outsiders.

Note that with this signing, there are now 17 “standard” contracts in Atlanta, and that the club will therefore have to part with at least two players before the start of the season. However, the club are unlikely to guarantee Tyrese Martin’s next campaign while Vit Krejci’s lease is unsecured.
