Warriors ready to take on Stephen Curry's latest challenge

The latest release of Stephen Curry about his future and that of the Warriors had the merit of pricking an entire community to the quick. Despite the titles and the construction of a true dynasty, the Golden State leader remains driven by the thirst to win and will essentially link his future to the overall level of competitiveness of his favorite franchise. Enough to put pressure on his leaders, even if he reiterated his hope of finishing his career with the Warriors.

Joe Lacob was the first to react. The owner of the San Francisco franchise initially wanted to calm things down. Lacob reminded everyone that he was on the same wavelength as his superstar, and that he was doing his best to surround him with a team capable of playing to win in a Western Conference that was still as tough as ever.

“From what I heard, all he said was what you'd expect, which was 'I want to win.' And if we were a really bad team, I guess he'd wonder if he really wanted to finish his career here. But he didn't and he didn't expect it to be,” he said on “Audacy's The TK Show”. “I'm pretty close to Steph, we talk a lot and we have a great relationship, I think he's perfectly in tune with the path of the franchise and with the efforts we make to offer as good a product as possible on the field (…). We try to be the best we can, and it's the same this summer. We've made big improvements to the team, we'll continue to do that in the future.”

At 36, Stephen Curry has two years left on his contract. He is eligible for a one-year, $62.6 million extension that could potentially take him until he is 39. The player has said he will not rush into it and will take it “step by step.” So he has not yet reached out to his franchise to discuss the matter. In the meantime, Joe Lacob's door remains wide open.

“We haven't talked about it. He's busy right now and should stay that way, focused on the Olympics. But if he wants to discuss it, that's his choice. That's not what he said at all, but if he wants to, we can certainly discuss it.”, he confirmed. “What he means to this franchise is extraordinary and we intend to see him play as long as he wants to and as long as he's capable of playing at this level. He's in incredible shape, so I have no reason to think he couldn't play a little longer. Maybe he's Tom Brady…”
