The Warriors missed the playoffs this season, two years after being crowned. The franchise therefore has one priority: regain the top places in the Western Conference. Except that in addition to thinking about this, the leaders have a huge number of files to manage in the coming days.
There is obviously the extension of Klay Thompson, the contract of Chris Paul, the Draft, and these decisions will have an influence on the future.
“Yes, everyone is making calls at the moment, whether for Draft rounds or for players”, explains Mike Dunleavythe GM of the Warriors, when asked if any teams are interested in the young people of Golden State. “It’s a good thing that the phones are ringing, that our players are being targeted. This is a good sign for their level and quality. This does not mean that we are involved in this. »
However, when we know the finances of the franchise, isn't a transfer the best option for the Warriors, in order to improve the quality of their workforce?
“I believe a lot in internal progression. I think our young people have a big chance to progress. That’s the main thing”continues the manager. “But it’s hard to make transfers in the NBA these days. A lot of teams are smart, they know what they're doing. To make a transfer that suits both camps, which everyone wants, it's hard. We're going to explore all that. There is a lot of discussion but I don't want to come forward and say that there will be a big transfer. It's possible, and if so, great. Otherwise, it is not an obligation to do so. »
Enjoy Stephen Curry for a while longer
The 2024 finalists, Boston and Dallas, proved that with a few tweaks, a team can change dimension. But Mike Dunleavy doesn't want to press the “trade” button too quickly.
“You have to find the right player that suits you and not just have players available. I call everyone, but if the player is not available and there is no price, there is no exchange possible”he summarizes. “We have to be realistic, I don’t want to exaggerate things. You have to be patient and be aware of how much time is left with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and, hopefully, Thompson. These guys are getting older and at some point they won't be able to play for the title anymore. I don't think we're there yet, but one day we will be. »
Not to mention that Joe Lacob, the owner of the franchise, hopes to save money in the coming years. The Warriors are the team paying the most luxury tax this year and even recently hired a salary specialist to address the future, with the new (more punitive) rules implemented.
“Joe Lacob has an idea of how much he wants to spend but if we present him with a situation where he has to spend a lot and have a big team, I think I know his answer”slips the GM.
So, to conclude, will the Warriors evolve during this offseason? “Things can always change. The Draft will arrive and choices will become available. But basically, I'm quite comfortable with the group we have”concludes Mike Dunleavy.
