Jordan Poole had a bad night in Miami. In addition to his 9 points at 3/10 in shooting, including 1/7 at 3-points, he mainly lost 5 balls, including 3 after whistles to carry the ball.
Golden State’s 6th man has a habit of placing his hand under the ball while dribbling, which allows him to vary his changes of direction even more. The problem is that it is often borderline legal, if not outright illegal. But for Steve Kerr, it’s a habit that all dribblers have picked up.
“I guess there is an email that arrived today but honestly I haven’t checked my emails”quipped the coach. “Like, we have a game today, I haven’t checked my emails. I was shocked because pretty much the whole league does that. They’ve been doing it since Allen Iverson convinced the referees it wasn’t a carry. He’s a ball carrier. What Jordan does is carry the ball, but the whole league does it. Guess I need to start checking my email on game days. »
A message from the referees?
We must admit that Steve Kerr has been saying the same thing for years and we can therefore give him a certain form of consistency.
“If you whistle that, you have to do it for every back because they all use the ball carrier. And often “ added Draymond Green. “The best dribblers in the NBA carry the ball. So if that’s something the referees are focusing on, we’ll see. But I’m not sure I’ve seen many games this year where the same player has been whistled three times. We whistled them one. I love Kyle (Lowry) and Jimmy (Butler), they’re awesome. But they also carry the ball. But if they only have one (whistled) and it was on Caleb Martin, I believe, then that’s not a high priority for the referees. I can’t wait to see if it continues to be hissed. »
On Instagram, Jordan Poole quipped by posting a video of Allen Iverson sanctioned for “carrying the ball”, with commentators explaining that it is a way for the referees to send a message.
It is also undoubtedly what the referees of the match between Golden State and Miami did. Because it must be admitted that if many dribblers in the current NBA (Ja Morant, Trae Young…) are very often at the limit of “carrying the ball”, Jordan Poole is perhaps the one who does it the least discreetly.
