Victor Wembanyama: “Chris Paul says things without filter”

After becoming the second best passer in NBA history, Chris Paul agreed that he was not “not always easy to live with”. The playmaker is a demanding leader, who does not hold his tongue in his pocket. Even less after almost two decades in the league and in a group as young as that of the Spurs.

“He says things without filter”, precise Victor Wembanyama. “He is direct but always with good intentions. I've never seen him talk badly about a player behind his back. However, he will say to your face the things that seem necessary to say for us to progress. It's sure that it's difficult to live with for some, but we are all humble thanks to Gregg Popovich and this frankness, so we know how to do it when we are frank and direct. »

Gregg Popovich and Chris Paul share a common logic: frankness, even if it hurts, bears fruit. “It’s a business, a job. It’s all about communication”recalled the former All-Star before the start of the season.

Focus on the message and advice, not the tone

The young Spurs have obviously accepted the advice of “CP3”, thinking first of the substance and not of the form. “If we really listen to what he says, and without worrying about the tone he uses to say it, then we understand the message”summarizes rookie Stephon Castle. “It’s always done with good intentions”insists Jeremy Sochan.

The proof with Charles Bassey, who “watch a lot more matches this season than in the past, thanks to Chris Paul”. “It helps me know what I’m going to do next game, who I’m playing, who I’m defending.”he adds.

The former Clippers or Suns is therefore not only a Father Fouettard for his teammates. “He encourages us all the time. He's a leader,” concludes Sandro Mamukelashvili. “I learned a lot from him. With him, you never lose confidence if you miss a shot. He tells you to keep shooting and tells you where the good shots and positions are. He is a player who is also a coach. Having him with us is a big advantage. »
