Victor Wembanyama (19 points, 5 blocks) makes a strong impression against the Warriors

After duels against Oklahoma City, Miami’s C team and two confrontations against the Rockets, the Spurs held their first big test against the veterans of Golden State, undefeated since the start of the preseason.

Gregg Popovich’s band, however, rose to this challenge brilliantly. His players took the lead from the first minutes thanks in particular to the dominant first quarter of Victor Wembanamya (12 points, 3 blocks) to take an 18-point lead and move towards a logical victory (122-117).

The jump ball had also set the tone for the two teams, when… Stephen Curry appeared in the middle of the field to face the 2m24 “Wemby”, to the great pleasure of the Chase Center. The contrast between the seriousness of the Spurs and the lack of commitment of the Warriors, between the “tall ball” of the Texans and the “small ball” of the Californians summed up the first half.

Victor Wembanyama then took the opportunity to cover Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson at 3-points, force a walk from Chris Paul, and change many of the trajectories of his opponents’ shots to put the Spurs in orbit. Behind the French construction site, these are Jeremy Sochan (7 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists), and the trio Keldon Johnson – Zach Collins – Devin Vassell (38 points between them) who shone.

The two coaches limited their starters to 20-25 minutes of playing time. And while the “Splash Brothers” were clumsy (5/24), Dario Saric (17 points), Jonathan Kuminga (13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), and Moses Moody (18 points) took the opportunity to put themselves out there again in the second half.

Now it’s time to get serious with the first match of the regular season on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday against the Suns for Golden State, and on the night of Wednesday to Thursday against Dallas for San Antonio.
