Valuation of NBA franchises: the Warriors still leaders

Like every year, Forbes estimates the value of the 30 NBA franchises. And for the second year in a row, these are the Warriors which are the best valued, to the tune of 7.7 billion dollars! THE Knicks (6.6) and the Lakers (6.4) complete the podium.

What is most striking in this ranking is that the value of all franchises has increased between 8% and… 76%! On average, it is possible to afford one for the modest sum of… 3.85 billion dollars, an increase of 35% compared to last year! Note that no franchise is now below $2 billion in valuation…

Such an increase can already be explained by the sale, over the last twelve months, of the Suns (for $4 billion) then the Hornets (for $3 billion), as well as the sale of Marc Lasry’s shares in the Bucks. .

But this increase in the value of franchises can also be explained by the imminent renegotiation of TV rights, the amount of which is expected to reach crazy heights. Potentially double what the NBA currently receives ($24 billion over nine years)! His current contract runs until 2024/25 and Apple, YouTube and even Amazon are on board, in addition to the historic broadcasters (ESPN, ABC and TNT).

With the potential arrival of two additional franchises, this should further boost the income of the current owners, as the addition of a team in Las Vegas and Seattle, for example, would allow them to split between… 8 and 10 billion dollars. That’s around $267 to $333 million each!
