Unrivaled | Napheesa Collier on the momentum of her WNBA season

Before observing a day of rest this Sunday, the “Unrivaled” league was back last night for its second evening with two matches on the program again. And if there was less suspense than the day before, the spectacle was still there, with to begin with a big spanking between the aptly named “Phantom” team and the Laces, who inflicted a setback of 38 points to their opponent!

The Phantom does not lack talent, however, between the Sabally-Griner tandem and the shooter Sabrina Ionescu, reigning WNBA champion. Except that opposite, the shooting guard (5/13 at 3-points) fell on a fiery Kayla McBride, with an impressive 7/12 behind the arc. Result of the races, in addition to having also dominated in rebounding (42 holds to 26), the Laces made short work of the Phantom, who gradually let go over the quarters to finally lose 86 at 48! For his introduction, coach Andrew Wade, assistant of the Mystics in the WNBA and promoted to coach of the Laces, could only be satisfied.

“It’s a really fun style of basketball. Removing two players from the floor means that everyone is involved in every action. The field is smaller and something happens every five seconds. In fact, you are always in action. And then, they are the best players in the world on the pitch. Every match is a little All-Star Game with the best of the best”, he confided.

Napheesa, Frank of the Necklace

The second match was much closer with another big match of Napheesa Collierthe “modest superstar” of the Lynx in the WNBA, and the victory for the Lunar Owls over Angel Reese’s Rose Basketball (79-70). Well accompanied by Allisha Gray (21 points) in a formation which turned to five players following the withdrawal of Cameron Brink, Napheesa Collier delighted with 31 points on 14/23 shooting, 6 rebounds and 4 assists after her double-double at 27 points and 10 rebounds from the day before. Opposite, the Gray-Sykes-Cooper-Reese quartet was not enough to support Azura Stevens and her 17 points.

The two teams were tied a little over a minute from the end of the third quarter (62-62), but the Collier-Gray tandem held on until the winning shot scored by Skylar Diggins-Smith , the “clutch” player of the team (79-70).

Resumption of the league this Monday with the meetings between the Vinyl and the Phantom as well as the Laces against the Mist.
