Udonis Haslem's number 40 now eternal in Miami

He doesn't have the statistics of his elders, but Udonis Haslem is now alongside Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Tim Hardaway, Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning in the sky of the Miami franchise.

The number 40 of the former interior, three-time NBA champion, was therefore removed by the Heat during halftime of the match against the Hawks.

“You all bet money that I'm going to cry, right?” I know you all think that”, had fun the former player, who had tears in his eyes. “Yes, it’s hard, hard, hard. Heat Nation, it was an absolute honor. »

A striking mark

An honor for a player who was not drafted, the Heat's best rebounder after spending twenty seasons in Florida. A total that only Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitki have reached in the past in one and the same franchise.

“The strength of Udonis Haslem was important and counted. This is one of the reasons why his jersey is retired. He will have left a very important mark”explained Pat Riley, president of the Heat.

His mark, much more than his figures, always modest, especially in the second half of his career, was his professionalism, the captaincy he assumed for 16 seasons or even the advice he gave to all the players who passed through the franchise over the years.

“The Miami franchise is not only going to celebrate his legacy but will teach people about his legacy,” describes Erik Spoelstra. “His legacy is also momentous for the league. My hope is that this is known across the league, so that the new generation can understand what a great winner looks like. »
