This is one of the best deals of the summer! For the minimum salary, the Suns managed to attract Tyus Jonesand thus get their hands on a real playmaker to support Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. Even if Jones is not part of the top 10 best point guards in the league, he is a very popular player, and his passages with the Grizzlies, the Wolves and recently the Wizards have always been conclusive.
What we learn SNYis that this same Jones had a better offer, and it came from the Knicks. It was a two-year, $10 million contract. After Immanuel Quickley was traded to the Raptors, the Knicks had not recruited a new point guard, and Tom Thibodeau had chosen to trust Miles McBride. Or rather, to play Jalen Brunson as much as possible, and as is often the case with Thibodeau, that proves detrimental in the final stretch.
So the idea was to recruit Tyus Jones as Brunson's backup, and he was a high-quality backup. But Jones didn't want to be a backup, and he preferred to earn less, and only for one year, to be a starter for the Suns. We also learned that the Wizards were also ready to offer him a “sign-and-trade”, or to extend him before trading him during the season.
But Jones went for the simplest option: a one-year contract at minimum wage.
