Three-time NBA finalist and champion in 2016 with the Cavaliers, Tyronn Lue has always won, since the start of his career, at least 60% of his matches in the regular season. His only negative record was during the 2018/19 season, where he was quickly dismissed after six defeats in six matches.
This year, his percentage of victories is dropping since he constantly flirts with a balance sheet (29 wins – 31 losses). He will therefore approach the cut of the season with less than 50% success, if the Clippers win this Thursday against the Rockets. Nevertheless, the coach believes that he is living a crucial season in his career.
“It’s more difficult this year”, he confides to the OCR. “It definitely makes me a better coach. You have to scratch, snatch each victory, each evening. Usually, it’s in the playoffs that you have to win one game after another. There, it’s like that every night. “
Tyronn Lue has had to do without Kawhi Leonard since the start of the season and Paul George has only played 26 matches so far. Not to mention the Omicron wave that hit the league in December and disrupted the workforce of each franchise. Even Norman Powell, who has just arrived, has already joined the infirmary.
“You don’t have to be prepared because you never know what’s going to happen”
The numbers are impressive: the absentees of the Clippers have missed 284 games in total and the coach has already lined up 23 different “major fives”!
“It’s hard sometimes”concedes Tyronn Lue. “You don’t have to be prepared because you never know what’s going to happen. We are preparing for a match and two players are absent with Covid-19, or are sick, or something else. But I learned to do things differently, and more on the fly. We had to operate like that. And it’s not just me, it’s also the coaching staff who did a great job. Our players too, who worked well despite the circumstances. “
Steve Kerr, who experienced this after the 2019 Finals with the injuries of his executives, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, shares the analysis of his colleague, whom he faced three times in a row in the Finals (2016-2018 ).
“He and I had the chance to coach very talented teams, which won a lot and went far in the playoffs”explains the Warriors coach. “So for me for the past two years, and for Lue this year, it was about dealing with injuries, and changing our tactics, our formations to find solutions to win instead of relying on talent to make the difference. So I agree with Tyronn, you become a better coach. ”
