Paul George, Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon and Reggie Jackson. These are the new players the Sixers recruited this summer. And to sign all these great people, the Philadelphia franchise can thank Tyrese Maxeywho himself extended for $204 million this offseason.
Why? Because he could have extended his contract in 2023. However, if waiting one more year was more advantageous for the franchise, in order to recruit, it was also riskier for him…
“I want to deeply thank Tyrese for his patience,” said Daryl Morey, the president of the Sixers. “This offseason would not have been possible without him. He was clearly on his way to becoming what he has become, which is an All-Star and a future star of the league. He was patient, which allowed us to have a successful offseason and be a contender for the title. Thank you to him for that.”
A bet that had to be justified to his family
Tyrese Maxey finished the 2023-24 season with the Most Improved Player Award, a new All-Star status, and a 25.9-point average. All for a salary of just $4.3 million, which was the final year of his rookie contract. It's hard to beat the value.
But a major injury or a failed season and his new contract was in jeopardy. In the end, he had the best season of his career and the Sixers were able to pull off an XXL recruitment. Everyone's a winner.
“It worked well,” delivers the playmaker. “When we heard that last summer, it was difficult. It was complicated to do that, especially when you worked so hard to get a second contract. You have to be professional, accept the situation. There are not many opportunities for a franchise to do that, so I am aware of that. I talked about it a lot with Joel Embiid. I also had to calm my family down, and that was the most complicated aspect, to convince them of the situation, on the payroll…”
