Since the start of his career in the Great League, Tyler Herro shoots 38.5% 3-point success, on nearly 7 attempts per game, making him one of the best outside shooters in the league over the period.
However, in the playoffs, his distance skill percentage dropped to 33% and Erik Spoelstra confirmed that he worked during the summer with his personal coach, Drew Hanlen, to modify his support to accelerate his shooting.
“This is what great specialists do, but he is not a specialist” the coach corrects himself. “That’s what great shooters do. They continue to refine things. For him, it's about accelerating the shot. »
Shorter shooting windows in the playoffs
Because Tyler Herro is one of the rare NBA players with a “negative” wingspan, that is to say that it is weaker (1m93) than his height (1m96). Which therefore means that he has small arms, a handicap in the face of tight defenses.
“He needs that when he wants to create (a shot) off the dribble or when someone is really clinging to him and he needs solid support to rise” explains Erik Spoelstra. “He is one of the rare shooters who has two or three different shots. And he needs that, the great players have these weapons. They can take a jumpshot on one possession then be a quick catch-and-shooter on the next. But these shooting windows close quickly, especially during the playoffs. And he really worked this summer so my hats off to him for that, and it adds weapons that can help our offense. »
