L'Atlanta Dream had her destiny in her own hands for this final evening of the regular season in the WNBA. Except that a trip to the New York Libertythe best team of the campaign, was not a gift…
However, between a team already assured of finishing in first place for the season and another that was fighting for the final qualifying place for the postseason, the difference in stakes and intensity was quickly felt.
Both teams will meet in the playoffs
It is therefore logically the Atlanta Dream which prevails (78-67) and who therefore recovers 8th place in the regular season, which will allow them to face… the New York Liberty in the first round of the playoffs!
For Tina CharlesAtlanta's veteran center, this last game of the season was also the occasion to validate two new records: the greatest number of rebounds and the greatest number of double-doubles in a career.
“I can't live this moment without mentioning Sylvia Fowles and what she meant to my career”explained the 35-year-old, who now has 4,014 career rebounds, when Sylvia Fowles stopped at 4,006. “The heights she has reached. The amazing person she is. It’s come full circle for me.”
Tina Charles in the History Books
Tina Charles needed just 3 rebounds to grab the record and it took her just a few minutes to get them, before also signing her 194th career double-double, again eclipsing Sylvia Fowles.
“It's special that she was able to do it here, in front of her fans and friends.”explained Tanisha Wright, the coach of Atlanta, her interior having played six seasons at Liberty, between 2014 and 2019. “Tina had a great time here. Even though it wasn't in Brooklyn, it was still at the Garden, the best place to play… It's great that she was able to break that record here, in front of her friends and family.”
Although she never won the title, Tina Charles continues to climb the history books, as she is also the second-leading scorer in WNBA history, behind only Diana Taurasi.
