With a view to allowing franchise managers to benefit from much more time to choose their players in the first and second rounds, the NBA could simply decide to extend the format of its Draft. An indiscretion that comes to us from The Athletic.
From next year, the duration of the ceremony could increase from one to two days. A possibility born following recent discussions with the various general managers (GM) of the league.
The solution to “botched” transactions?
As it stands, each team has five minutes in the first round and two minutes in the second to draft their young talents. Enough to complete an entire Draft after about four hours.
Problem: the second round is obviously much less interesting than the first, even if talented players can be selected (Nikola Jokic for example, in the middle of an advertisement!).
Without mentioning the economic or marketing aspects, extending the format of the ceremony would above all allow the franchises to better manage their discussions during the evening, rather than concluding everything in a hurry and haste, with these deadlines of only five (first round) and two minutes (second round).
As a reminder, the 2024 Draft is currently scheduled for June 27, a month and a half after the traditional Lottery (May 12).
