To mentally prepare, Damian Lillard turns to boxing

Muhammad Ali jersey on the back, Damian Lillard donned boxing gloves this summer and trained in a gym in Oregon, as he has done for several years. The Bucks point guard, like other athletes, is a regular in the ring.

Why this activity? “It’s good for the legs, to physically strengthen your body”, answers the former Blazers player. You have to keep your hands up, move and it's good for your physical condition.”

A very physically demanding sport, boxing is perfect for testing your body. But Damian Lillard doesn't practice it for its physical virtues. “I don't go into the ring and think that with my arms raised, I'm going to make my shoulders stronger when I shoot.”he explains. “It’s more mental than anything else.”

Discipline and mental strength

“Basketball and boxing are not the same, that's for sure. But sometimes, after six, seven or eight rounds, my personal trainer asks me to do something and I'm tired. It's not easy to keep moving, to keep your hands up, to block and throw punches,” insists the basketball player. “So the mental challenge is there, with the pressure and the way the nervous system works. It translates like that. During a match, you have to keep pushing, you can't stop. That's the thing I take from boxing in basketball: don't give up.”

“Dame” therefore sees a link between the efforts required in a ring, facing an opponent, to continue to make the right moves despite fatigue and tension, and those that will have to be made on the court, in the final moments of a suspenseful encounter.

“You have to be in good shape in the ring. Even if the punches I get aren't very strong, I'm not going to be knocked out, if I lower my hand, I'm still going to feel them. You can't lose your concentration, you have to keep moving. It's discipline and mental strength that are the most important things.”

Two qualities also needed with a basketball. “I think you can know how to rise to the occasion without being afraid of the consequences because you've trained your mind to be ready for that. A lot of my training is for that.”concludes the Milwaukee star.
