Only 20th offense in the league last season, the Pelicans obviously suffered from the prolonged absence of Zion Williamson, who only played 29 matches. This year, the star, if she is at her best, will have a lot of answers and solutions in her hands to relieve Willie Green.
Now that the Pelicans have managed, year after year, to reach a very good level on defense, we must do the same thing on offense. A summer recruitment, on the bench, was carried out in order to correct this defect.
“We want to go in the right direction on both ends of the pitch and we first tried to become a good defense,” relates the coach for the NBA website. “We are going to reach new levels this season because we hired James Borrego as assistant coach. He will bring us firepower that he learned in San Antonio and while coaching Charlotte. It’s clear that we want to progress offensively, but we don’t want to lose our identity because of that. »
With Zion Williamson but also CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas, New Orleans has the weapons to become a much better attack next season. By placing more emphasis on the 3-point shoot in particular.
Because if the Pelicans are not clumsy in this exercise (36% success, 15th in the league), they are however not one of the teams which use this weapon the most, with only 30 attempts and 11 successes per match (respectively 29th and 23rd in the league).
“Players need to step up a notch in this area,” announces Willie Green. “We know that McCollum is capable of hitting from afar when Ingram is a good 3-point shooter, but he needs to take more. There will be more shots for Naji Marshall, Herb Jones and Jose Alvarado. We also drafted Jordan Hawkins from UConn who was a big shooter in college. He will have minutes when we need shots. »
