“The Grizzlies had a big win, but I also have to highlight the big win for the Memphis Hustle. I mean it’s the result of complete development.” Taylor Jenkins Don't even add any. Of the nine players he used tonight in the victory over the Warriors (116-107), six of them have played with the Memphis Hustle in the G-League over the last two years.
The Memphis coach was particularly able to rejoice in the contribution of his two “ two-way contract » Jacob Gilyard And GG Jackson, as well as his sophomore Vince Williams Jr., author of 24 points. “Programmed” to be the bridge between the G-League and the NBA, the first two cities are currently taking advantage of the massacre in the Memphis workforce to show off.
“At the start of the year, I would have been surprised if you had told us that all three of us were going to play, and even more so if we had played together,” recognized Jacob Gilyard. “ I think we all believe in each other. Everyone trusts each other.”
As had already been the case in the defeat against the Knicks in the previous match, the tandem was again valuable against a Golden State team still in full doubt despite the return of Draymond Green.
Jacob Gilyard was very good after the break, making the most of his 19 minutes of play with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Vince Williams Jr and GG Jackson were the big men of the match. The rookie, drafted in 45th position, hit hard with 23 points including five “catch-and-shoot” 3-pointers on 8 attempts which really hurt the Warriors.
GG Jackson, precocious talent
At just 19 years old, stringing together two games in a row with more than 20 points is a rather rare event. Only two other players in NBA history have managed to do as much, at the same or younger: LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
Almost namesake of its leader JJ Jackson, GG Jackson knows that he must keep his feet on the ground in front of this kind of “marker”. The Grizzlies rookie simply must continue to take this available playing time to gain experience, and prove that he has his place in the NBA.
“I have to stay humble. I must not get caught up in these stats”he confided. “It’s obviously a great feeling to be a part of it, but these guys were already established. I feel like their basketball was much more advanced at that age. I'm just lucky to have this opportunity to go out on the field and be able to play.”
Two-way contract : Designed to create a new bridge between the NBA and the G-League, this type of contract allows each team to secure the services of two or three additional players, to develop them mainly in their affiliated development league franchise but also up to 50 matches in the NBA.
