The time-out that Mike Budenholzer never forgets to take

There’s a line in the NBA rules, 74 pages long, which Mike Budenholzer knows perfectly. On page 22, we can read that “each team is limited to two time-outs in […] the last three minutes of the last quarter”.

Clearly, if there are three time-outs left for a coach three minutes and ten seconds from the end of the meeting, ten seconds later, he will only have two left. He is therefore faced with a simple choice: should he take this time-out or finally lose it?

“The players know I want to use it”replies the Bucks coach for The Athletic. “The whole team is aware of it. It’s almost a habit, even a kind of obsession to be sure to have all our time-outs for the last three minutes. »

Mike Budenholzer learned, at his expense, in a meeting against Portland in November 2019, that this famous time-out had to be taken, at the latest, at 3:01 from the end of the last quarter. One second later, it’s too late…

And over the seasons, the players have taken the fold and know that, in the seconds preceding this passage towards the last 180 of the game, a whistle will sound. “It didn’t take me long to understand,” says Jrue Holiday, who arrived in Wisconsin in 2020. “The coach wants to use it and I understand why even if, sometimes, if we are in the rhythm, I preferred to play. »

Organization and rest

Result: the 2021 champion is the coach who has taken the most time-outs in the 45th minute of meetings for two seasons. This break fulfills two missions for the coach. “I hope it gives us a chance to be organised. I would be curious to know if we execute our attack better with throw-in on the side. »

Better maybe not, well yes. Because with almost a point per sequence after a time-out, the Bucks are the eighth most effective team in these situations this year. And over the last five seasons, Milwaukee has always been in the Top 8 in this area, except in 2021/22.

In addition, this cut in the last corner of a meeting is an excellent way to restore energy to his players and especially to Giannis Antetokounmpo, who never spares his efforts.

“We can give Giannis and the team a break. In the last quarter, we often need to breathe. With these time-outs, we can make Giannis play even more since he can rest more. In a last act where he has to play 10 or 12 minutes, I find it valuable to keep a time-out for that. »
