The Suns hope that Kevin Durant will finish his career in Phoenix

I don't even think about it… I haven't even discussed a new contract with anyone. I'm just trying to focus on basketball. » This is what was declared in mid-October Kevin Durant about a possible contract extension. At the time, the Suns had the option to offer him a new contract, and ultimately, they didn't. The All-Star winger will now have to wait until July 2025 to land a two-year extension, and his boss announces that it's as if it's done.

“He loves being in Phoenix, and we love him being here,” said Mat Ishbia at ESPN. “He's had a great start this season, and he's one of the leaders for the MVP award, and we're off to a really good start. We hope Kevin signs an extension and stays with us for the long term. We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix. »

The Suns limited by the regulations

But why not have it extended last October? “It was not possible to sign a two-year extension last summer, NBA rules prohibit it” he recalls. “We agreed together that after the season we would talk about it and deal with it. Kevin wants to be here, we want Kevin to be here. There has never been a single sign to the contrary on this subject. »

If the Suns could not extend Kevin Durant, it is because of his age…

As Kevin Durant will be 38 years old at the end of his current contract in 2026, the new collective agreement allowed the Suns to only extend it by one year. But in 2025, these same Suns will be able to offer him a new two-year lease at the maximum salary: around $62 million per season!
