A page has turned in Philadelphia with the dismissal of Doc Riversfinally kicked out after three consecutive failures in the conference semifinals.
It is now up to Daryl Morey to find his successor, a goal for which he does not intend to rush as he explained on Wednesday. It must be said that the leader of the Sixers is looking for the rare bird.
“We will take our time for the coach. We don’t think it will move quickly. You have to be careful with the word “process”, but that’s really it”, did he declarebefore listing the qualities sought for the position. “We are looking for someone who brings leadership and accountability. Someone who is good tactically, who knows how to have good relationships with his star players and who is good at signing star players, a coach that players want to play for, someone who will build a great franchise.
Basically, that’s pretty much everything any NBA franchise is looking for…
Convince Joel Embiid… and James Harden?
The president of the Pennsylvania franchise also conceded that its leader, Joel Embiid, was disappointed with the departure of Doc Rivers, but assured that his pivot remained ready to give everything for the Sixers.
“It’s up to me to convince him that the new coach is someone with whom he will have a good relationship”he added. “I can see him continuing to improve. Most of the discussion with Joel was just him telling me, ‘I can do more, I can work on this. Watching the playoffs and this guy, I thought I could add that to my game…’”.
Philly’s other major objective will be to extend James Harden, who has a $35.6 million player option that he could decline in order to become a free agent.
For Daryl Morey, keeping the best passer in the NBA remains “Plan A”. But in case of departure, he will have to find a creative player in the lead. Whatever happens, Philly will have something to be competitive next season, and he recalls that it is always an ideal position to have the MVP in its ranks.
“There are about 26 teams that would prefer to have our roster,” he continued. “We will start with the MVP of the league. The lottery was only to get the first player and hope that player would become as good as the best player in the league. We’re off to a good start.”
