A few days ago, Draymond Green revealed that he was convinced, on the evening of his Draft, in 2012, to be chosen by the Pacers. He had completed two trials with the Indianapolis franchise, and he already saw himself joining Paul George and Roy Hibbert. This Wednesday is Myles Turner who tells his Draft. It’s 2015, and the Pacers pivot says his agent told him he would be chosen 5th by the Orlando Magic. Finally, he will “fall” to 11th place.
“Hezonja?” Who the hell is this?’ »
“ I thought I would go to Orlando as the 5th pick. My agent told me: “We will be in 5th position in Orlando. You did a good workout there and they are enthusiastic about you.’ I said, “Okay, that’s cool.”“ Turner tells the podcast Run Your Race. “I’m sitting in the green room and I hear: ‘With the 5th pick, the Orlando Magic selects Mario Hezonja’. I said to myself : ‘Who the hell is this?’“.
At the time, Hezonja was a European prospect who played in Barcelona and numerous mock drafts had placed him in the Top 10 of this Draft. He was not unknown to the scouts, but no one imagined him so highly. “I was a little upset because, you know how they do it… They bring in European hopefuls that we don’t really know” continues Turner. “And I saw the highlights: ‘OK, very good, he can steal a little, he can dunk, he can shoot a little’. I said to myself, “Okay, he’s not bad.” But I was still angry, obviously. »
Miami, a “difficult place” for a young person
In the end, Turner will therefore be chosen in 11th position by the Pacers, and he especially did not want to be chosen in 10th position by… the Heat.
“It was a blessing in disguise. I didn’t want to be the 10th pick in Miami. I didn’t need, at 18-19 years old, to be in Miami. It’s a difficult place. I am aware that there is a culture there. There’s one thing people don’t realize: when we get drafted, we’re kids trying to enter the adult world. Some of the cities you go to make or break your career. It was the best thing for me to go to a blue-collar town and work hard. »
