“Welcome to Brooklyn Jordi Fernandez”. It was through a first post published Monday on X/Twitter that the Nets announced the arrival of Jordi Fernandez to the position of head coach, to succeed Kevin Ollie (and Jacque Vaughn) next season. Brooklyn waited for the elimination of Sacramento, where Jordi Fernandez had held the assistant position for two years, to make the news official.
The announcement was followed by press releases from the coach, owner Joe Tsai and GM Sean Marks. The latter particularly praised the diversity of experiences of Jordi Fernandez, while Kevin Young and Mike Budenholzer were among the finalists. The international profile of the native of Badalona was visibly appealing.
“Over the last six weeks of our research, it became increasingly clear that Jordi was the best coach to lead our team”, notably wrote Sean Marks. “Jordi brings a diverse set of basketball experiences and knowledge acquired during a coaching career that has taken him to all corners of the world. At every stage, Jordi has consistently demonstrated his ability to implement solid processes and creative systems designed to optimize each team's specific workforce. »
On the bench of Spain, Nigeria, Canada…
Beyond his adventure in the NBA which began in 2009, starting in Cleveland, with the Canton Charge in the G-League, then in Denver and finally Sacramento, Jordi Fernandez also cut his teeth in FIBA basketball.
First, as assistant coach of the Spanish selection from 2017 to 2019 then with Nigeria alongside Mike Brown, for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. But it is with Canada, as head coach, that he really shone on the international stage, winning the bronze medal at the last World Cup.
“I am truly grateful to be able to lead the Nets as head coach. My family and I are thrilled to join such an incredible organization, to be part of the vibrant Brooklyn community. I look forward to working with this talented group of players and collectively moving our team forward.”for his part wrote the new strong man on the Brooklyn bench.
The rest should arrive soon with the scheduled arrival of Steve Hetzel, potentially as first assistant to Jordi Fernandez. The duo's mission will be to relaunch a formation which has turned its back on the “bling bling” of the Irving-Harden-Durant trio to begin a reconstruction around young elements like Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Cam Thomas and Nic Claxton. The Nets will notably have to improve their defensive commitment, a failure for which they have regularly paid a high price this season.
