The “lottery” smiles again on Spurs

Not everyone is as lucky as Spurs. And it’s not Detroit, Charlotte or Portland that will say the opposite. With the 5th worst record in the league, the Spurs have gained a place to enter the Top 4 of the next Draft.

As a bonus, San Antonio recovers Toronto's choice which was protected from 1st to 6th place. It was the remainder of the Jakob Poeltl exchange, and luck therefore doubly favored the Spurs. After taking advantage of the first choice to select Victor Wenbanyama in 2023, San Antonio has all the cards in hand to bring two new high choices to fruition.

“We are always looking at how we can improve the team, no matter the different ways of doing it,” comments Spurs GM Brian Wright. “And two draft picks give us a great opportunity to add two players to our young core or see what we can do with the picks. We will evaluate all options. »

What to do with the two choices?

It is therefore not certain that the Spurs will select two players on June 26, since Brian Wright could very well exchange one of the two choices to obtain an experienced player to coach this young team.

There is even the possibility of swapping the two choices to draft higher and secure the services of Alexandre Sarr or Zaccharie Risacher, projected as the two best “prospects”. Brian Wright seems convinced that he will be able to find players capable of integrating Gregg Popovich's squad into this 2024 vintage.

“I say it all the time, there are good players in every Draft, and you just have to do your homework, do your best to evaluate who can fit into your franchise, who can fit with the players that you you have around and you have to make the best decision possible”he explains. “We don't have the first pick, so it will depend on others, but we think there are good players in this Draft who can help us. »

The top priority, whether through the Draft or free agency, is to find players compatible with Victor Wenbanyama. “We absolutely must take this into consideration because we want to build a team with cohesion and capable of growing together”concludes Brian Wright.
