The Lakers in free fall

Two weeks ago, the Lakers were at 10 wins for 4 losses and seemed to have found an identity. Here they are now at 12 wins for 10 losses, with six defeats in eight matches. But the most worrying thing is the gap since Los Angeles has lost its last six games by an average difference of 21.8 points…

Against the Heat, there were some pretty incredible sequences, where a simple screen offered a completely open layup or 3-pointer to Tyler Herro and company. For JJ Redickthis collective drop in tension is strange.

“Basic” concerns

“We are currently struggling on both ends of the pitch, and on basic things” can only see the coach after this 41-point defeat (134-93) in Miami. “It’s weird, very weird. »

Cumulatively, the Lakers have lost their last two games by 70 points (41 + 29), the worst sequence in the club's history. JJ Redick therefore appeals to the pride of his players, but also to cohesion.

“There has to be a certain feeling of responsibility”he explains. “We can become divided and it's easy to not want to be held accountable, especially when it's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed. We are all embarrassed. It’s not a match where we had the right state of mind in the fight, the professionalism.”

The rookie coach thus engages in a delicate exercise, trying to confront his players with their responsibilities, without overwhelming them too much. At least publicly…

Anthony Davis and LeBron James approve

“There has to be some sense of responsibility on the ground, and I am ready to take all the responsibility in the world. It's my team, I lead it and I'm embarrassed. But I can't organize us physically. I cannot be physically involved in the game. I cannot physically speak and announce the [changements] and defensive coverages… And besides, I don't blame the players. That's not it. I am responsible for it, but responsibilities will also have to be assumed on the ground… I don’t have the impression that we are on the same wavelength at the moment.”

The positive point for Los Angeles is that, unlike last year, JJ Redick is at least in line with his two leaders, Anthony Davis and LeBron James, who validate “100%, 1000%” his speech, assures the “King”.

“I have the greatest confidence in this group and in these coaches”concludes Anthony Davis. “Personally, I think it all starts with me. If I play better, others play better. I take my responsibilities, especially during the last two matches. I wasn’t up to the task for the team in attack.”
