Almost three months ago, Rafael Stone, the GM of the Rockets, announced the color for the future of the Texas franchise with two sentences. The first was: “I think we are at the end of the first phase. » The second : “We are clearly going to bring in veterans during the off-season. »
The “free agency” has confirmed everything: Houston has recruited experienced players this summer to begin the second phase of its project.
The executives dreamed of a Fred VanVleet – Dillon Brooks duo, and they got it. Jeff Green, who will be 37 at the end of August, is the perfect prototype of the veteran who can mentor and share his experience with young players. Not to mention the arrivals of Jock Landale and two drafted players: Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore.
The Rockets wanted experience and with Fred VanVleet, Jeff Green and Dillon Brooks, they have a trio with 177 playoff games. The first two cities even won the title, Fred VanVleet with Toronto in 2019 and Jeff Green with Denver, just a few days ago.
Admittedly, they had to take out the checkbook ($130 million over three years for Fred VanVleet, $80 million over three years for Dillon Brooks) but the team felt it was necessary.
The Rockets finally have an ambitious face
Since the departure of James Harden, Houston was thus built around inexperienced young people, drafted year after year, who took up all the space. The idea was to make these talents grow despite mistakes or defeats. With the arrivals of Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks, things will change, as Ime Udoka has already announced.
“Most of the playing time and roles have been given to young people in the past. There will be changes in the second phase,” warned the former Celtics coach. “We are adding young elements, but also veterans. I think it will raise the level of competition. Nothing more will be given like this”.
The first objective, that of strengthening, has been fulfilled. It is obvious that the 2023/24 version Rockets will be much more competitive on paper than in recent seasons. It will clearly be necessary to do much better than in the last two exercises, which ended with only 20 and 22 victories…
Of course, it remains to be confirmed at the start of the school year, because the Western Conference is incredibly dense and this new group, led by a new coach, will have to find its balance.
