For a few days, Jaylen Brown is eligible for a five-year, $295 million contract extension with the Celtics.
As the journalists who follow this file explained it, an agreement between the player and Boston was not going to intervene in the first hours, but discussions exist. THE Boston Globe even specified that the two camps were confident of a future signing.
But why is it so long? Our colleague Brian Windhorst provides an explanation.
“It’s debatable, but it’s an important and fragile agreement”, analyzes on the antennas of ESPN. “I know that both sides want to succeed in finding an agreement. But there’s one point to remember: If Brown extends, he can’t be traded for a year. In addition, he is eligible for 35% of the salary cap but he might not get it. The Celtics can negotiate that, or a player option. You have to negotiate. »
The Celtics already have major contracts in their squad, including Jayson Tatum, Malcolm Brogdon, Derrick White, Al Horford and Robert Williams III, not to mention Kristaps Porzingis who has just extended, who will all be in Boston until at least the season. 2024/2025 and will then weigh almost 130 million dollars.
So offering $59 million on average per season over five years to Brown is not a trivial decision, especially with the new rules of the collective agreement which will punish more harshly teams that spend too much.
