Jevon Carter was able to test his popularity rating with local fans during the weekend of the Bulls Fest organized in front of the United Center. The locals have shown their affection and support for one of the summer recruits who is not unknown to the battalion, since the point guard grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and was obviously a Bulls fan.
Like Ayo Dosunmu before him, Patrick Beverley at the end of last season or even Derrick Rose in the more distant past, without forgetting Dwyane Wade, players from Chicago always benefit from special support from local fans able to transcend them.
This was noticed by Marc Eversley, the GM of the Bulls, who will try to keep this characteristic in mind for his future recruitments.
“When we can find young people who can tick a lot of boxes on the court, it’s an advantage when they come from Chicago. These kids wear a particular pride on their torso. Every time a kid from Chicago plays for the Chicago Bulls, it’s really, really special.” did he recognize.
Support and inspiration
This regional status of the stage notably gave wings to Ayo Dosunmu who was carried by the public during his rookie year, to the point of becoming the darling of the United Center.
“I’m proud to say I’m from Chicago because I know the ups and downs of the city,” he said last season. “I’ve spent my whole life here. I have seen so many things, so many tragedies. For me to be in this position, doing what I love at the highest level, whenever I have the opportunity to show love to my hometown, I love doing it”.
These players also have a role model for the city’s troubled youth, as recalled by Randy Brown, a former Bulls player also from Chi-Town.
“For kids growing up in tough circumstances, I think it’s important for them to see a kid from Chicago succeed in the NBA, wear the uniform, because they think if Jevon Carter or Ayo can succeed in wearing the Bulls jersey, maybe they too can do it,” he slipped.
The NBA currently has a dozen players from Chicago, including Anthony Davis, Talen Horton-Tucker and John Konchar.
