After creating the event a year ago with the arrival of Damian Lillard, the Bucks quickly became disillusioned. After a very average regular season, marked by a rapid change of coach, the Bucks were taken out in the first round by the Pacers! As a result, the 2021 NBA champions fell into line, and the NBA did not even invite them to Christmas matches. This is a first since 2017.
“I think we are somewhat neglected,” notes Khris Middleton. “We should have had a game on Christmas Day. But the NBA thought differently. I don’t need that as extra motivation…but I’m a little disappointed.”
The Bucks read and see everything…
For Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks “have always been neglected”. As for Doc Rivers, he assures that this absence is a source of motivation. “We’re all paying attention”admits the Milwaukee coach. “We see it, we read it… I don't think I'll have to use it (as motivation), it will use itself, if you know what I mean.”
Despite this elimination in the first round, the Bucks still see themselves as candidates for the title, and not outsiders. “ We are part of this group… We have Dame and Giannis, obviously” recalls Middleton. “There's me, Brook and the others… We are clearly candidates for the title in the East. And it doesn't matter what others have recruited or earned in the past. I think others think the same about us. »
Damian Lillard finally in shape
What could make the difference is that Damian Lillard is 100% physically and mentally fit. Nothing to do with last season which he experienced as if in a fog.
“My teammates and coaches are going to see the real version of myself this year”he concludes. “I just know what type of season I had, what type of summer I had and what preparation I had. They’re going to get the real version of me.”
