France – Team USA is to basketball what France – Brazil is to football: the dream final for French fans. At the Olympic Games, there was France – United States in Tokyo in 2021, the most recent. The same match took place in 1948. And in between, there is Sydney 2000. A pretty crazy piece of history for French basketball.
At the time, Team USA was still a Goliath. Since NBA professionals were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in 1992, the Americans had never lost. They had already beaten France in the first round. However, the French led by Laurent Sciarra and Antoine Rigeaudeau would deliver an admirable final. Surely much more complicated than Kevin Garnett and company imagined.
This is what we are telling you today in Histoire(s) de basket.
