With Bob Myers gone, Mike Dunleavy Jr. took over as GM of the Warriors. A delicate succession because his predecessor built a dynasty in Golden State, but which is part of a lineage.
“Overall, our philosophies on basketball are pretty similar”, explains the new leader. “We are looking for versatile and combative players who adapt to our system/style of play.”
A philosophy that the former basketball player sums up with a formula: Superstars and Rockstars.
“The difficulty in building a team is the difference between acquiring talent and setting up a group”continues Mike Dunleavy Jr. “You need superstars and rockstars. The superstars are Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and the rockstars are the complementary players like Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston and Kevon Looney. You have to have both, that’s the key.”
Mike Dunleavy Jr. recalls that he has an extremely valuable weapon, namely the continuity of his major trio (Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green). The three men have in fact been playing together since 2012, know each other by heart and have formed the basis of the franchise project ever since, and therefore of recruitment.
“Some nights Chris Paul will be a great complement to the guys we have and other nights he will be the driving force behind what we do.”
The arrival of Chris Paul, the intimate enemy of this group for so long, fits into this context, the GM counting on the veteran to relieve his “Splash Brothers”.
“Chris is a huge asset to our team from a competitiveness and intelligence standpoint. He’s one of the best point guards of all time, and at 38 years old, he can still shine. Some nights he’ll be a great complement to the guys we have and other nights he’ll be the driving force behind what we do. In terms of leadership and locker room management, we are very happy to welcome him. »
The “double timeline” is in any case over at Golden State with the departures of James Wiseman then Jordan Poole. From now on, there are only rookies Brandin Podziemski (20 years old) and Trayce Jackson-Davis (23 years old) as well as Jonathan Kuminga (20 years old) and Moses Moody (21 years old) who are under 25 years old in the squad. from Golden State.
“We understood this balance better last year”concludes Mike Dunleavy Jr. “We need to inject younger talent into the team but not have too much. We have a good mix this year.”
