The NBA lost one of its most iconic voices yesterday with the death ofAl McCoy at the age of 91. The famous Suns commentator began his career in September 1972, and illustrated the adventures of the Arizona franchise for 51 years, until the end of the 2022/23 season, with his colorful vocabulary, marked by his signature expressions like “Shazam”, “Zing Go the Strings” or “Heartbreak Hotel” to signify a defeat or a missed shot. So many “gimmicks” that have marked several generations of Suns fans.
His extraordinary longevity also made him a legend in the history of this team born in 1968. Al McCoy thus saw the majority of the franchise's best players come through, from Walter Davis, the club's best scorer in history, to Paul Westphal, Kevin Johnson, Charles Barkley and later the Nash-Marion-Stoudemire trio, to the emergence of Devin Booker. He had joined the “Ring of Honor”, the Phoenix Hall of Fame, and also the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
Tributes have poured in since the sad news was announced, starting with that of Adam Silver.
“Al was a master of his craft. As the longest-tenured NBA play-by-play announcer in league history, he set the bar high as he called Phoenix games for 51 years. He entertained generations of fans with his trademark style and unwavering love of the game. He was a valued friend to so many in the NBA community. I extend my deepest condolences to Al’s family and friends and the entire Suns franchise.”, wrote the commissioner.
One of the major figures in the history of the Suns
Charles Barkley and others, such as Devin Booker, one of the last Suns superstars whose exploits Al McCoy commentated on before his retirement, also had their say.
“I had the privilege of watching Al McCoy chronicle the first eight years of my career. He was inducted into Ring of Honor in my second season, and that’s when I truly understood what a special talent he was. Throughout my career, I learned what a special person he was. Al will be missed, and I’m so happy that our legacies in Phoenix will forever be intertwined.”, to Devin Booker.
Jerry Colangelo, the former owner of the franchise who hired Al McCoy in 1972, summed up McCoy's contribution well, placing him as one of the most deserving members in Suns history.
“When I think back to all the people who have made incredible contributions to this franchise over decades, not just years, but decades, Al has to be at the top of the list.”, he concluded.
