Suns investigate after verbal altercation between Russell Westbrook and fan

Before being “clutched” by his rebounds and his defense at the end of the game, Russell Westbrook had especially been clumsy during Game 1 against the Suns. At halftime, he was thus at 5 points (and 5 assists) but at 2/9 in shooting.

When returning to the field, the Clippers point guard warmed up in the hallways with a Phoenix fan. We can thus hear Russell Westbrook say to this supporter: “Be careful what you say” punctuated at one point by an “asshole”. What the fan responds to the MVP: “Cash it like a man”…

One can easily understand that Russell Westbrook was chambered as he returned to the field. But why did he cross the dressing rooms intended for the public to go from the locker room to the floor?

A shortcut in the middle of the opposing fans…

It is Duane Rakin, the local journalist of the Arizona Republic, who explains it on video. Because since 2020 and the renovation of the Footprint Center, there is a private club, the Club River Gila, in this part of the hall. This is located between the visitors’ changing room and the pitch. To reach the floor from their locker room, the players of the opposing teams must therefore either make a fairly long journey under the stands to bypass these boxes… or take this shortcut and therefore pass among the fans present in the private club.

For a long time, this did not cause a problem since the Covid-19 pandemic had limited the number of fans. Opposing players have therefore become accustomed to using this shortcut. Except that with the massive return of supporters, as well as the more tense atmosphere of the playoffs, this passage in the middle of opposing fans is more risky.

On the side of Phoenix, it was announced the opening of an investigation into the incident: “We are aware of the incident that happened tonight and we are reviewing it” she indicated.
