After scoring 42, 26 and then 41 points in the three previous Las Vegas Aces games, A'ja Wilson didn't take his foot off the accelerator against the Chicago Sky: 30 points at 10/19, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks!
This makes a total of 139 points scored in four games, enough to equal Maya Moore's record, set between July 10 and 22, 2014 (33, 26, 32 and 48 points scored with the Lynx)!
For the two-time defending WNBA champions (21 wins – 12 losses), who qualified for the playoffs but are currently in fourth place in the standings, it's a fourth victory in five games. Enough to put a smile back on Becky Hammon's face, after the three defeats in four outings that marked the return to action after the Olympics.
“I think we are going in the right direction. But I don't know.”, explains the former assistant by Gregg Popovich. “Maybe it's just because I have a stubborn belief in these women. I think we're going in the right direction, but I know we still have to move up a gear.”
Becky Hammon wants support for her star
Even without Kelsey Plum, who was injured in the ankle and saved as a precaution, Las Vegas made short work of a Chicago team whose offensive limitations are all too obvious.
Becky Hammon thus praised the performance of the usual substitute, Tiffany Hayes (20 points), who offered support to A'ja Wilson, dominant against Kamilla Cardoso (14 points, 2 rebounds) and Angel Reese, in double-double (12 points, 16 rebounds) but at 4/12 in shooting, and who was badly countered by her opponent.
“I told them I felt like a lot of our frustration came from the fact that we were just average.”explains Becky Hammon, who was afraid that her star would end up losing confidence in her teammates, not being up to her level of play. “But now we're putting things in place, being there for each other, and that's really what I want to build on.”
It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to win a third consecutive title at the end of the campaign…
