Steve Kerr will leave Team USA after the 2024 Olympics

Two competitions, then leaves. Like his predecessor Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr will not stay on the Team USA bench for long. The Warriors coach has indeed confirmed his departure, after the 2024 Olympic Games.

He will therefore only have led the American selection for the 2023 World Cup, finishing in fourth place, then in Paris next summer.

” No “he responds to The Athletic when we ask him if he will continue the adventure after 2024. “For me, it’s two years. It’s a cycle. Popovich has coached for the World Cup and the Games, now it’s my turn to pass the baton. I think it should happen like this. »

The coach adds that leading the American team remains a “huge commitment”. “I think it was different with Mike Krzyzewski and Jerry Colangelo, because they were trying to build a culture and a system for the years to come”he specifies. “It made sense for Coach K to stay. But at this point, we cycle and let go. »

Steve Kerr wants to announce his group as soon as possible

Steve Kerr will have spent a total of five years on the bench of Team USA since he was Popovich’s assistant at the 2019 World Cup then at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Who will take over from him? Grant Hill and USA Basketball could why not still turn to the assistants of the current coach, Tyronn Lue or Erik Spoelstra in this case.

In the meantime, the four-time NBA champion coach with Golden State must assemble a team for Paris 2024 in order to hope to start with a gold medal like Popovich. As the stars are motivated, it should have no trouble forming a very competitive group.

“This discussion will happen in the next two months. We would like to have the list as soon as possible. We don’t have a date, but we don’t want to leave the players in uncertainty.” announces Steve Kerr. “We want everyone to be excited about playing for Team USA, that’s the first sign. From then on, we are talking seriously. Many are hungry to play. We can only take 12 so it will be very, very difficult. »
