Even before the start of the season, and for their 50th anniversary, the Spurs had displayed their ambition: to beat the attendance record for a regular season game in the NBA, on January 13 against the Warriors.
How ? By playing in the Alamodome, a 65,000-seat hall, which was the setting for Spurs until 2002. The objective has not yet been met, but the Texas franchise has already announced that it has sold more than 50,000 tickets!
“The fans have been here for fifty years and the Alamodome holds a special place in their hearts, for the time we played there,” commented Gregg Popovich for the Express News. “It’s quite special. There will be a lot of people for this match and you don’t see that every day, if ever. It’s a once in a lifetime event for San Antonio fans, they’ve embraced the idea so it’s pretty cool. »
There are two weeks left to sell the last 15,000 tickets, but if more than 50,000 people are present to receive the defending champions, then this meeting will become only the fourth in NBA history to display such an attendance.
The record still belongs to the Hawks, on March 27, 1998 against the Bulls of Michael Jordan, with 62,046 spectators, ahead of the 61,983 of a Detroit – Boston in January 1988 and the 52,745 of a Philadelphia – Detroit in February 1987.
