THE denver post announces Cathy Engelbert, will travel to Denver on Wednesday as the WNBA assesses the city’s potential to host a new franchise, possibly as early as 2025. The women’s league commissioner is set to meet with a group of investors interested in creating of a franchise, but also visit venues likely to host the team.
Former Nuggets player and coach Bill Hanzlik was consulted by investors, and he confirmed the talks: “We would love to have a WNBA franchise. That would be wonderful. Women’s sport is one of our top priorities. »
More teams = more jobs for players
Last May, Engelbert revealed that the WNBA had a list of ten cities competing to create one or two teams by 2025. Denver would be on this list, alongside Portland, Austin, Nashville, Charlotte, Toronto, Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay Area. “We need more than 12 teams” she had launched. “We need to be in big cities in this country where our demographics, market research and all of our data shows that there are big markets for the WNBA.”
The other objective of this expansion: to mechanically increase the number of places for professional players, many of whom are forced to go abroad after their Draft, or even to end their careers prematurely.
