This is the first very big blow of the season. Sixers : dolphins in the Eastern Conference standings of their evening opponents, the Celticssince the start of the campaign, Nick Nurse’s men have brought down players from Boston (106-103), not without a little fear in the last moments, at Philadelphia.
An attack with little variety but no less realistic and effective around an excellent duo Tyrese Maxey (25 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists) – Joel Embiid (27 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks) and lead defense in the second half (17 points on 25% shooting for Boston in the third quarter, in particular): this was the winning formula for the Sixers. Even if the Celtics, going from -14 to -3 in a few seconds in the “money-time”, gave a big scare to the residents of the Wells Fargo Center…
Symbols of the Celtics’ offensive woes in this match, Jayson Tatum (16 points on 14 shots, but 15 rebounds) and Jaylen Brown (11 points at 4/13) were put in difficulty by the defense of the premises, unlike a solid Kristaps Porzingis (29 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists) and to the always valiant Jrue Holiday (12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) and Derrick White (19 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and steals).
This is the second defeat in a row for the Celtics, beaten earlier this week in Minneapolis. While the Sixers, with this victory, the fourth in a row, take the lead in the Atlantic division alone at the expense of their rival and opponent of the evening, and more broadly of the Eastern Conference.
WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER
– Philadelphia is the new leader of the Eastern Conference. A quiet force in the Eastern Conference in this young 2023/24 season, the Philly club has just moved up a gear with this great victory against Boston. Before this match, the only real test for Joel Embiid’s teammates had been a match, won, against the Suns deprived of Bradley Beal and Devin Booker… So here is a real nice reference victory for the troop from the City of Brotherly Love , who thus steals first place in the East from the Celtics.
– A discreet evening for the “Jay’s”. The Boston club can undoubtedly find comfort in saying that despite the complicated evening on the offensive level of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown (27 points at 10/27 on cumulative shots), the final difference was ultimately only by 3 points… But the fact remains that the “Jay’s” struggled in attack against a tough defense from the Sixers, very physical both out wide and closer to the circle.
