So close throughout the game, even ahead at one point, Sergio Llull and Spain nevertheless failed to impose themselves against Australia. First match and first defeat therefore for the Roja, who already find themselves with their backs to the wall before facing Greece, also dominated by Canada.
The Spain veteran knows his team has shown weaknesses in some areas but, even in the 'group of death', he is not discouraged.
“The key is to be tougher in defense, to control the rebound better because we haven't been good on that point, and also to play our game,” he lists. “I have confidence in this team. It's clear that the group is complicated and doesn't allow us to be bad for five minutes in a match. On Tuesday, we'll have to be more focused and tough. I always see a lot of desire and enthusiasm in this team. We're going to try to win this match.”
Lack of experience and aggressiveness
With the final match against Canada, one of the favourites for the gold medal, Sergio Llull and his teammates have no choice. Will they have the resources to bounce back?
“The group is doing well, it is still as united, with the same habits”, explains the silver medalist in London in 2012. “It's true that, at the beginning against Australia, we perhaps paid for our lack of experience. We suffered things instead of being 100% focused and physically in the match. Ultimately, it's the Olympic Games, a unique experience, and the new and old players know that there is still a lot to do and play. This match against Greece is a first step towards qualification.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo and his teammates are also playing for part of their survival in this group. As the Bucks star scored 34 points against the Canadians, the Spaniards are warned.
“He is obviously one of the keys: he is a great player, one of the best in the world and we will have to be very careful,” warns the Real Madrid playmaker. “To make sure that his qualities are not highlighted, to stop him a little without losing sight of his teammates, who have a lot of experience.”
