Sandro Mamukelashvili praises the human qualities of Gregg Popovich

After a complicated start to his career in Milwaukee, where he only had crumbs to eat, Sandro Mamukelashvili showed a more interesting face at the end of last season in San Antonio. The Texas franchise has decided to reward him with a new one-year, two million dollar contract. To the delight of the man nicknamed “El Mamu”.

“I’m excited and happy. My words cannot describe how I feel”he explains to BasketballNews. “I want to play hard and be part of this rebuild in San Antonio. I am satisfied with our players, we are close, we love each other. We have superb chemistry off the court. I will give 110% in every game. »

Among his teammates, the former Milwaukee will discover Victor Wembanyama, compared to Giannis Antetokounmpo whom he saw closely at the Bucks.

“You can tell because he is very long and athletic,” explains Mamukelashvili. “He has a very good shot for his size. I think when he progresses he will be an important player for his generation. He’s a good guy, very down to earth. I love the way he works, he’s clearly a professional. I can’t wait to play with him, to get closer to him, to offer him assists. »

Gregg Popovich is “ like a mentor, a father figure”

Another important character in Texas for the 24-year-old player: Gregg Popovich, who has also just extended (at a price of gold) his adventure with the Spurs.

“He impacted me from day one. Just seeing him in the gym is amazing. I grew up being a San Antonio fan, and he’s a great coach and a great guy. It teaches us that basketball is part of life, that we should be interested in what is happening in the world and around us. He’s like a mentor, a father figure. When we see him, we want to give it our all, to show him how much we want it. »
