Sam Cassell back in Boston to close the loop

Assistant for 14 years in the NBA, where he specialized in the development of point guards, Sam Cassel was stationed in Philadelphia for the past three years, helping hatch Tyrese Maxey. We had also seen the two men be very close during the series between the Sixers and the Celtics, finally won by Boston.

On the resumption, it is in the staff of Joe Mazzulla that Sam Cassell will work. A nice wink of fate since it was during the last title won by Boston, in 2008, that he played his last game as a player.

“Joe (Mazzulla) made it happen. He saw me working with a few players before and wanted to understand my personality and the way I interact with them. We have mutual friends that he reached out to and we made it work,” he slipped.

Cash but sincere

So here he is back in Massachusetts to put his mark on the Celttics workforce, with his way of doing things, a little cash, but above all sincere. Because he remained a veteran, an assistant close to his players.

“I am very sincere with the players”, he added. “Sometimes they don’t like it, but I’m telling the truth. I talk about the coach’s game plan and tell them what he expects of them. Sometimes players are reluctant, but I think I can be 100% honest with a player without them taking it the wrong way. It’s a character trait that I know I have. I am very attentive to the players, I am a former player, so I understand what they are going through. Like I tell them all the time, I’ve been every player on a team, from number 1 to the end player on the end of the bench. I was all those players. I understand what they are going through mentally”.

He who won his third NBA championship ring under the colors of the Celtics returns with an ambition, to bring Boston back to the top by stabilizing a staff which experienced a lot of upheavals last season, and which precisely lacked former players. There is therefore hope.

“We have a chance, we have a real chance. There is talent here. It takes health and cohesion. But they are readyhe continued. “You know, I saw what it looked like when the Celtics won their last title. I was part of this team. And once we accomplish that, it will be wonderful. It’s great to be back, especially when you’ve already won there. I know how passionate the fans are. Boston has passionate fans and they just want passionate players.”
