The WNBA is set to take a break, first for the All-Star Game and then more importantly for the Olympics. And it's the New York Liberty who is well ahead in the standings, with 21 wins and 4 losses!
The players from the “Big Apple” have thus regained the upper hand by beating the Connecticut Sun twice in a few days (18-6), who had made the best start to the season in the women's league, but have now slipped to 2nd place.
Last night, for the last game of the two teams before the break, Alyssa Thomas and her teammates had a great opportunity to stay on the heels of Sandy Brondello's players, who had to do without several starters, including Breanna Stewart. Except that Sabrina Ionescu pulled out all the stops for the Liberty (82-74).
The franchise record for 30-point games
Sure, the point guard lost 7 balls, including one that allowed DiJonai Carrington to go on the counterattack and get back to 4 points (73-69) in the last five minutes. But apart from that, she constantly lit up the Connecticut defense, to finish the game with 30 points at 6/11 from distance, plus 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
In better shape than ever, she took the club record for the number of games with 30 points or more, with 13. Enough to allow her to rise to 19th place in the history of the league, tied with Seimone Augustus.
“It’s magical to play here, especially for me” she explains at the Barclays Center. “Every time I shoot, I feel like it's going to go down with the crowd supporting me. So I'm going to keep shooting.”
