A month ago, Russell Westbrook had distinguished himself by asking to be moved to the bench to facilitate the integration of the new recruit James Harden. Often described by those who worked with him as a model teammate, the veteran leader therefore sacrificed his starting place, and a little playing time as well.
A month later, the Clippers remain on seven straight victories, and Russell Westbrook does not regret his choice. The game is therefore worth it.
“I've been in the league so long that I understand the definition of true sacrifice and what that looks like.”, did he declare after the seventh consecutive victory for the Californians, against the Knicks, Saturday evening. “Sometimes it doesn't go the way you want it to, but if it's for the good of the team, that's the most important thing. It’s a team sport and I know that the most important goal is to win a title.”
Fewer minutes, more victories
During the Clippers' good series, Russell Westbrook saw his playing time drop to 17 minutes on average. Not enough to demotivate him, however, as the playmaker intends to continue his mission.
“I want people who come to the game to understand that it doesn't really matter whether I play five or twenty minutes. When I'm on the field, I make sure I'm competitive and give everything I have. I know my duty is to give my all every night and make sure that the people who come to the match appreciate the time I spend on the field.he added.
When he is not on the field, he does not spare himself, and continues to encourage, give confidence and guide his partners. Precisely, as he plays less, he brings even more in this regard.
A source of energy
“You can’t be a leader only when you want to be.” he continued about his current role. “Part of my duty, since I’ve been in this league, is to be a leader. Regardless of what happens, these guys need to learn and understand how important their role is to this team. Every chance I get, I try to listen to them, instill confidence in them, and make sure they understand how essential they are. It's part of my job. »
After a period of adjustment, Tyronn Lue's new rotation seems to be bearing fruit, and we will therefore remember that it was Russell Westbrook who was at the initiative.
“I am aware of my value and my abilities. No matter how many minutes I spend on the field, I know I am a source of energy. God endowed me with this ability”he concluded.
